I know what you're thinking, 'grey' and 'lipstick' are two words that don't belong in the same sentence. I thought exactly the same, but after being talked into it I let the girl on the Smashbox counter swipe the Be Legendary Matte Lipstick in Punked on my lips and oh my god. My little emo heart fluttered. The matte purplish-grey looks cool and grungy but not quite as intimidating or bold as full-on black.

I've had a few weeks to mess around with this lipstick and come up with 3 different ways to wear it ranging from barely-there to full-on Queen of Darkness depending on how ballsy you're feeling.

This first one is the easiest to wear and a good way to test the (grey) waters. I applied a sheer layer of grey lipstick and then whacked on a glossy, nude-pink over the top (MAC's Patisserie) and smushed them together a bit with my finger to blend. The result is a sheer, cool-toned, glossy, pinky-purple.

My favourite look of the three is definitely grey but not too in your face to wear during the day. I just applied the lipstick straight from the bullet and used my finger to dab a bit of The Balm's Mary-Lou Manizer in the centre of my lips. This lightens the colour a little and gives some dimension so it's not just flat, matte colour which can be a tad intense.

This last one is not for the faint-hearted and I'm not sure I'm ever going to wear this outside of my own room but it does look badass. I moisturised the hell out of my lips before this one and then lined them with a black pencil eyeliner (Soap and Glory Smoulder Khol in Superblack). A black lip liner would have been more forgiving on my lips but, like most people I assume, I don't own one so I've had to make do. Then I used a lip brush to apply the grey lipstick to the middle of my lips and used my finger to blend the liner and lipstick together for a black-grey ombre.
